Effect of Ta Content on Scratching Behavior of Ti-Al-Ta-N Coatings on Titanium Substrate

The effect of Ta alloying on the structure, mechanical properties and scratching behavior Ti-Al-N-based coatings deposited Ti substrates by reactive direct-current magnetron sputtering is studied. It was found that increasing content in Ti1-x-yAlxTayN from y = 0 to 0.65 led a decrease hardness Young’s modulus but an increase hardness-to-modulus ratio. This resulted reduction load-bearing capacity Ta-alloyed enhancement their toughness. competition among these trends determined improved crack resistance adhesion Ti0.31Al0.34Ta0.35N coating under scratching.
